When it came to creating a playbill for What A Drag! presented by Rae’s RBar & Grill, Aries Fatale and Luiz Fatale knew immediately they wanted entertainers who bring electricity, energy and positivity.
And they feel confident they got it right when Paradox Rei, Kennedy Fatale, Gypsy Rose Fatale, Prima Van Cartier, Toni Andrews, and Milani Paris all committed to performing during the Saturday, Sept. 14, event at Smithwick Dance Hall at Heart of Texas Ranch. The catered meal is by Super Taco and the cash bar is by Brass Hall. Advanced tickets are $25.
Aries and Luiz have been impressed by what they’ve witnessed both on stage and in dressing rooms. They say each entertainer is friendly and humble and does their best to engage the crowd and make audience members experience something they can’t get anywhere else.
That’s the case with the indescribable Paradox Rei, who calls herself a drag entity. Aries and Luiz say Paradox Rei has a reputation of keeping people guessing on what she’ll wear and the songs she picks. It’s not unusual for her to get creative with her costumes, even using paper plates to devise a look.
“I feel like her work needs to be shown, how she goes from one look to the next,” Luiz said. “The audience needs to see that aspect.”
“That child works (very hard),” Aries added. “She doesn’t get the credit she deserves. She does a lot of charity when you need her to.”
The incredible Toni Andrews will impress from the start, the two say, because of the way she dances. Her entertainment skills are will leave the audience speechless, they noted.
“She gives you a show, guaranteed,” Aries said.
Selena fans will love Gypsy Rose Fatale, a well-known impersonator of the Queen of Tejano, Aries and Luiz said.
Luiz noted that Gypsy Rose has been practicing Selena’s gestures on stage, in her videos and other public appearances since he was a child.
“His movements are down to the smallest detail, exactly how Selena had it,” Aries said.
“The mics are the exact same movement,” Luiz added. “Everything down to the second.”
One entertainer, Prima Cartier, is new to drag performing but has impressed the duo with her demeanor.
People will be enthralled with “her energy on the stage,” Luiz said. “She’s humble, very sweet, very nice.”
The overall look of a drag show — from the music to the dances to the MC — set a mood for audiences that’s very important to the energy of the show.
That explains why Aries Fatale and Luiz Fatales contacted Kara Foxx-Paris to be the MC. In short, the two knew that Kara would get the audience going by entertaining attendees and keep the energy high for the entire show.
Luiz, who has known Kara for four years, said she doesn’t get the credit she should for her hosting skills: her professional approach to preparing for each show, engaging with the audience by talking to attendees, and getting them ready to have a night to remember.
“I love the way she hosts,” he said. “I just love her. I felt she was the best fit to host.”
One part equally important to the entertainers themselves are the costumes and accessories chosen deliberately to enhance the aura as the performers sashay throughout their numbers.
Luiz Fatale said the numbers each performer choses along with the dance movements also are done meticulously with the entertainer revealing a love of a particular song or mood at that moment.
“One of the favorite shows is one that has a variety of everything: ballads, dancing queens, slow numbers,” he said. “They’re very glamorous.”
Aries Fatale said that part of self-expression from each entertainer will be on full display at What A Drag! presented by Rae’s RBar & Grill. He noted entertainers can spend as much as $1,000 on one costume. That’s why many try to create and buy costumes that be used with different music in various shows.
“You’re definitely going to see costume pieces you’re not going to see anywhere else,” he said. “The costumes are out of the ordinary. If you’re going to a drag show, you’re a person who loves costumes and over the top.”
The two encourage attendees to stick around after the show to meet the entertainers and take photos with them.
