You are cordially invited to What A Drag! And celebrate with us

The start of August always meant a month closer to the beginning of football season. But since the HLEC was launched in 2017, the month has a different significance for me.

That’s because one of our board members spent August planning the center’s launch party. In simple terms, the HLEC has changed me in many ways. I won’t bore you with the details of how; just know there’s not a day that passes that I’m not thankful for the HLEC or the people it has affected and served.

The center’s impact is the reason why we’re thrilled to stage What A Drag! presented by Rae’s RBar and Grill and Haus of Fatale, a show featuring some talented drag performers from Austin and San Antonio. It beckons celebrating and having a great time with people who accept you as you are.

We’ll celebrate another year of the HLEC during this event with a very special birthday cake created specifically for What A Drag! One of our allies volunteered to design, bake and decorate this masterpiece. I wish I could describe it to you, but that’s not possible. The reason is because, well, it’s kind of like my prom dates. I never wanted to see the attire until it was time to leave the house, so she could see my natural reaction.

Like our attendees, I’ll see the cake for the first time when I arrive at the Smithwick Dance Hall for the drag show Saturday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 apiece and includes a catered meal by Super Taco and a cash bar.

What A Drag! also allows attendees to spend an awesome evening enjoying high-quality entertainment. Credit Luiz Fatale and Aries Fatale for assembling a talented group that will thrill and delight during the event. The two personally reached out to each one and deliberately chose performers who are distinctly different from each other. In short, attendees won’t be bored, especially with one Kara Foxx-Paris serving as the MC. Kara has a unique stage presence that can’t be described.

Please consider this your personal invitation from me to join us at the Smithwick Dance Hall. And come celebrate another year of encouraging and helping the LGBTQ community and its allies with the HLEC and enjoy a piece of cake with me.
